Boat Trailer User Guide & Warranty

Redco and Tinka Trailers

Maintenance Schedule

Thank you for purchasing a Redco or Tinka boat trailer. Proudly made in Australia, our trailers are built for durability and performance. With proper care, you’ll enjoy years of reliable towing.

The below information is Mayfair Marine’s recommended guideline to maintaining your trailer and its components.

Redco Tinka recommends:

  • Wash your trailer well with fresh water after each use in salt water, especially concentrating on brakes and any moving working components and high areas of salt water exposure.
  • Wash your trailer regularly with fresh water, if you use truck wash or car wash rinse thoroughly.
  • Always allow your trailer to dry before storing away.
  • Store your trailer in a well-ventilated area with low humidity (if possible).
  • Service your bearings and inspect braking components 6 monthly or before any long trip.

Below is a recommended schedule of the items that should be checked / serviced regularly.

Bearings Lubrication 6 monthly, service and replace 12 monthly.
Tyres Check for pressure and wear indicators regularly.
Brakes Inspection 6 monthly, service 12 monthly.
Wheel Nuts Check tension 6 monthly.
Wobble Rollers Inspect 24 monthly.
Brackets Inspect 12 monthly.
Bolts & U Bolts Visually check regularly, check tension 12 monthly.
Coupling Visually check for lubrication and correct locking down 24 monthly.
Winch Visually check after each use for correct locking and / or defects with strap.

Towing and Helpful Tips

  1. Test and check lighting and brake adjustment regularly, if your trailer has mechanical cable brakes which are the most common form of braking system, ensure your brakes are adjusted correctly. There should be approximately 20mm of movement between your brake handle and rear coupling piston.
  2. After a long trip to the ramp, your brakes, bearings and grease will have heated up - but once the bearings are submerged, the cool temperature will cause the grease to contract and ‘suck in’ water into the bearing cavity - we recommend where possible allow bearings and calipers to cool before entering the water, a great time to do you safety audit.
  3. Ensure your hubs have a dust cap, cover or bearing buddy! Covers can and do fall off, however they should be replaced immediately. So, do not submerge the bearings of the trailer in the water without a bearing cover of sorts. You’re only inviting water in, and major problems down the line. All Redco and Tinka boat trailers are supplied with high quality two-part marine seals, bearing buddies or hub caps.
  4. The most critical factor determining how your trailers tows is balance. Your trailer should have between 7-10% of the total rig weight (trailer, boat & gear) distributed on the tow ball. Resetting the trailer balance point is not a complex task, consult your local dealer on arranging this work to be completed
  5. Do not undo the safety chain or winch strap/cable on level ground and reverse down the ramp. The slightest jerk while reversing could launch your boat onto the ramp and well short of the water, not a good look! Do not rely on your winch strap solely.
  6. Always fit your safety chain or secure turnbuckle at front of boat and tie down boat firmly at the transom, it is illegal and unsafe to tow an unsecured boat on a trailer.
  7. Even if you are an experienced boatie, this trailer may not be familiar to you. Therefore, during the first retrievals choose fine weather and a good ramp; do not drive your boat onto the trailer until you have gained sufficient knowledge on how the trailer operates.
  8. After your first trip with your new trailer (150klm or more) ensure all bolt on brackets, nuts, bolts and U-bolts are checked for tension, consider this as a ‘bed-in’ period and once checked for tension this will ensure tightness will stay secured for the duration until your service check period.
